Salt March Satyagraha
The 1930 Dandi Salt March: open civil disobedience against the salt tax as a model of Satyagraha.
The Salt March (Dandi March, 1930) is the best-known single Satyagraha campaign. Gandhi and followers walked about 240 miles from Sabarmati to the sea at Dandi and openly made salt, breaking the British salt monopoly law.
Key features of the method:
- Clear, limited law chosen (salt tax)
- Open announcement and public walk
- Non-violent discipline
- Willingness to accept arrest
- Mass participation after the first act
The campaign turned a daily necessity into a symbol of unjust law and drew worldwide attention. It is often taught as the classic example of civil disobedience inside Satyagraha.
