Satyagraha in History

Major Gandhi campaigns that used Satyagraha: Champaran, Non-Cooperation, Salt March and more.

Under Gandhi, Satyagraha was applied in a sequence of campaigns that mixed investigation, non-cooperation, constructive work and, when needed, open civil disobedience.

  • Champaran (1917) – indigo farmers; inquiry, refusal to leave, non-violent pressure → Champaran detail
  • Kheda – revenue relief for cultivators after crop failure
  • Non-Cooperation Movement – boycott of British institutions, titles and goods
  • Salt March / Dandi (1930) – 240-mile march and open salt-making against the salt tax → Salt March detail
  • Later civil disobedience and related non-violent action, including the period around Quit India

The same word has been used by later non-violent movements outside India that draw on the model of truth-force and disciplined non-violence.
